Collection includes seven letters to Jules Bois (a writer on the occult) and a 3 p. essay on Gauguin. Though there is some reference to work in progress, including portraits, the detailed letters are primarily philosophical musings on a variety of topics. Schuffenecker writes of "le beau surnaturel" and the doctrines of "Boudhisme" and admits his failed efforts at suppressing passion in his quest for wisdom. One letter dated 1895 is a poem entitled "A l'aimee" dedicated to Bois, while another letter, signed "le martyr," characterizes the artist's impoverished existence in 1898. In the brief, largely biographical essay, Schuffenecker expresses his admiration for the work of Gauguin.

Henri Antoine Jules-Bois was born in Marseilles, France. The year of his birth is variously given as 1868, 1869, or 1871, depending on the source. He was educated at the College of St. Ignatius, where he received his A.B. and B.Sc. degrees, at the Collège de France, where he was granted the Litt.D, and at the Sorbonne, where he earned a Ph.D. Jules-Bois' interests were wide-ranging. The women's emancipation movement of the 1890's inspired novels such as 'L'Ève nouvelle' and 'La femme inquiète...
